Synopsis The swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years.
The word “Swastika” has its root in the word Suwasti meaning 'all is well'. Today of course it is impossible to separate the image from the brutality of the Nazi era.
This was made all too clear in an incident in the US where swastikas were built onto the local Catholic cathedral at St. Cloud, Minnesota. The removal of the swastikas from the church, 60 years after the end of WWII, focused heated debate about the swastikas. The decision to remove and replace the swastikas on the church stirred very strong feelings in the Jewish and Catholic communities on both sides of the debate.
